How are individuals enrolled into the workshop at TradeWinds?
If the individual does not have the appropriate funding we refer that person to the Bureau of Developmental
Disabilities Services.

I have a child under 3 years of age and I am interested in therapy services. What should I do?
Children under 3 years old are referred to First Steps for therapy services.

What if I would like to seek employment opportunities at TradeWinds?
If you are seeking employment opportunities and have a special need, you would contact the local Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Does TradeWinds only service children with special needs?
No. TradeWinds services children of all abilities from ages 0-6 years of age.

DID YOU KNOW?

1. Our history dates back over 50 years! We began under the name Lake County Association of Crippled Children and Adults. In 1997 we celebrated our 30th birthday incorporated as TradeWinds.

2. TradeWinds original building was built soley by volunteers. Members of the Northwest Indiana Trade Unions donated all of the labor, while civic, business and service organizations donated all materials. Since then, we have had two additions.

3. In 1967, we had 16,000 square feet, now we have 63,000 square feet!

4. We provide services for over 900 people a month!

5. TradeWinds is a Lake Area United Way Agency and has a national certification by CARF.

6. TradeWinds employs approximately 250 people including full and part-time.

7. We provide professional services primarily for children, infant though 6 years, and adults 16 and over. Those who need help between the ages of 7-15 are handled on an individual basis.

8. The Pirates Organization is a group of over 500 men & women who have been benefactors of TradeWinds' Children's Programs for over 30 years! You can become a Pirate too! Just check with Human Resources.

9. We have four group homes, 2 male and 2 female, in Schererville and Crown Point. Eight people live in each home. We have 25 people who live independently in the community, with some program assistance.

10. We have a sewing factory which produces thousands of garments a month for the Department of Defense, including smocks, medical uniforms, hood and booties, and chemical protective overgarments.
